Generation X – My first make-up from the ’90s

Hello Beautiful Beings :))

Today, I’d like to take you back to the nineties. For some of you it would be like the reminiscence of the childhood but for the others this article will be a form of a history lesson. Of course, all I’m going to do is describe the trends in make-up and fashion characteristic for this decade. My youth was when the guys from Guns N’ Roses were young and handsome, when Backstreet Boys were listened to on the radio tape players and when the lion-like mane (created with the use of a hair crimper) was the most popular one.

How did make-up use to look like in the nineties? What were the canons of beauty in those times? Get into the time travel machine so we can come back to this grotesque era when just few knew what a concealer, a beauty blender and make-up brushes were. Fasten your seat belts… these already existed in the nineties 😉

Make-up of the nineties corresponded with the music genres that dominated the world at that time. The first part of the nineties was definitely devoted to grunge whereas the second half was taken over by pop music and Spice Girls. That was plain to notice in the way women applied their make-up. The grunge make-up was more toned. Nobody heard about a make-up base. When it comes to foundation, most women used Dermacol – a product originated from The Czech Republic. This colour cosmetic provided heavy coverage and was ‘dangerous’ for those whose hands were unskilful (yes, back then all foundations were applied with the use of hands only). Once again, this product was beloved by females because it was perfect at camouflaging all possible skin imperfections. For those who have got interested in this cosmetic, Dermacol is still available in some e-shops. I assume that by now they have changed the shades of it because a few years ago the colour range was rather… poor. Coming back to the nineties, regular drug stores were full of Rimmel, Constance Carroll and Pierre Rene products. The whole Europe went nuts about a mint-and-green mascara that featured a silver cap and a hairy brush. I have to admit that this product gave really good results.

Today we focus on making our eyebrows beautiful and well-shaped but in the nineties the thinner the eyebrows were, the cooler you looked. Basically, you could just define the super thin eyebrows but combing them with a transparent gel was enough. Toned colours, eyelashes coated only at the upper eyelids, subtle eyeshadows (we can say that we own the matte eyeshadows to the nineties) that contrast with the dirty shades of very… VERY pearl lipsticks. I have to admit that even I had one lipstick of a white pearl shade (in fact, it wasn’t used at all but its magic was about just having it in your backpack, and that was all). Actually, it looked bad on all kinds of lips and complexions, yet it was visible from the long distances and became a real hit among all girls loving pop music. Of course, a red lipstick was always trendy and willingly applied for all events. When it comes to eyelids, these were defined with the use of shadows that left pearly finish and shone from 20 miles because these were applied in great quantities and reached up the eyebrows. Would I want this kind of make-up to come back again? Hm…
