What are the methods of removing hair? Let’s get rid of unwanted hair at home

Hair removal is one of the procedures that we carry out at home regularly. I’m curious if you have your own tried-and-tested methods of removing the hair from your body, or you are still looking for this one and only technique which will free you from the unwanted hair. Anyway, I decided to describe all the techniques of getting rid of hair I’m acquainted with – I hope, you’ll find here your new favourite technique of making your body smooth! Ready? Steady? Go!

Which hair removal method to choose?

I’m going to start from answering the question that appears as the most frequently asked one on many Internet forums. Indeed, women don’t know which hair removal method to choose for themselves and what to take into consideration while selecting it. No wonder why females aren’t sure which technique to apply since there is no one universal method that suits all. In other words, all the techniques are equally effective, yet they serve various women differently. In other words, the choice depends on our preferences, skin sensitiveness as well as time and money we can devote to this procedure.

HOME HAIR REMOVAL TECHNIQUES

* Hair Removal Cream

Definitely, this is the procedure designed for people who aren’t resistant to pain, yet it isn’t proper for hypersensitive and irritation-prone skin. In short, removing hair with the aid of a cream depends on the strong action delivered by the chemical substances (acid derivatives) which destroy keratin the hair is built of. Definitely, this is a painless and simple method. You have to apply a cream to the hairy area. In most cases the product needs just 5 minutes to dissolve the hair. Once it is done, we need to use a plastic spatula to remove the cream together with the hair. The entire procedure resembles shaving – the difference is that the spatula doesn’t have blades so it doesn’t cut the hair. However, it doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to irritate skin with this item… Unfortunately, it is possible. When I was removing hair by applying this very technique for the first time, I was pressing the spatula to the skin so forcefully (I thought this was the way to carry out the procedure) that I had red slashes on my legs afterwards.

* A Disposable Razor

I guess this is the most popular method and I’m sure I don’t have to introduce it to anyone. Indeed, shaving is just a temporary solution because we cut the hair at the base. In general, hair needs 1-2 days to grow out, which is a significant drawbcak of this procedure. To make matter even worse, the grown-out hair is prickly. Naturally, a good razor has to be sharp but, in order not to harm oneself,  it’s crucial to use it together with a hair-softening cream that facilitates better glide of blades. Nowadays, I use a razor only in emergencies when I have to get rid of hair immediately, or between the regular hair removal sessions carried out with the use of an epilator.

* Epilator

This is my beloved method of hair removal. I don’t mind using the device mostly because I’m resistant to pain. The truth is that for many people the procedure of using an epilatior, despite being cost-effective, is too painful to carry out. I invested my money on epilator only once and this decision definitely paid off. Now, I have to remove hair less frequently, I don’t waste money on creams or disposable razors. In brief, this method depends on pulling hair out (together with the bulbs) due to discs of an epilator head. Basically, the discs rotate, grab hair and pull it out. I have to admit that this method is time-consuming, I can’t deny this; removing hair from my legs takes more or less an hour. Fortunately, I’m pretty skilled nowadays as well as my hair is no longer so thick as it used to be. In my opinion, it’s worth giving a go to this method because hair that grows out after 3-4 weeks is weaker and thinner. Therefore, if you would like to save time and say goodbye to hair for a few long weeks – I wholeheartedly recommend using epilator. The good news is that I have also a solution even for those who are sensitive. The truth is, I didn’t applied this method but I’ve heard that it really works. Namely, the beauty market offers epilators featuring heads that are able to cool down and massage legs during the procedure. There are also devices that can be used underwater. All of that to minimize the pain that is connected with the hair removal procedure.

* Wax Hair Removal

I haven’t used this method yet, therefore, I’m going to describe this technique very briefly. First of all, this procedure can be undergone either at a beautician’s or at home. It depends on safe and fast hair removal thanks to applying wax. At home, the easiest way is to use readymade wax stripes which are supposed to be warmed up between palms of the hands, separated and attached to legs; best if we manage to stick the stripe accordingly to the direction of hair growth (after washing, when the hair is lifted). Up to this point it’s all fun and games but here come the first obstacles. The stripe has to be pressed, smoothed and then pulled out in the opposite direction to the hair growth using one energetic motion – this step is said to be the most painful. Basically, sometimes the residues of wax may remain on the skin, therefore, it’s suggested cleansing the legs with an oil afterwards. The last piece of information is that this method also frees us from hair for 3-4 weeks, yet wax used for hair removal shouldn’t be applied when we have varices or capillary skin.

* Sugar Paste

This hair removal method is fairly… exotic. Hindu women love using sugar paste to get rid of their hair – also because it can be made at one’s own. However, this process is mundane and requires having appropriate sills. If you want to give a go to this method, I suggest visiting a drugstore and buying the cosmetic there. Luckily, sugar pastes aren’t expensive. Basically, before we apply the paste to our legs, we have to warm it up in our hands to make it more flexible. Actually, sugar paste works alike wax – it removes hair and the bulbs; we don’t have to occupy ourselves with shaving for a long time. One portion of sugar paste has to be rubbed against the hair growth direction; it has to be pressed to the skin. Without taking your hands off the paste you have to pull it out using one, swift motion (just as if you were removing wax). The good news is that you can use the same portion of the paste again and again to remove all the hair growing on your leg. Unfortunately, successful hair removal requires us to be skilled – so far all my attempts have ended up in failure.

* Laser Hair Removal

Currently, I’m trying to get one of such devices although the cost of it really scares me off. The truth is, we have to spend a lot of money but the investment is said to be economic. The device is some kind of a hair bulb ‘deactivator’. This procedure depends on exposing hair to the laser which is absorbed by melanin. Then, as a consequence of the emitted heat, hair follicles and cells responsible for hair growth are significantly damaged. What factor does deliver the looked-for effects? Hair has to contain a lot of melanin so, in other words, it has to be really dark. Furthermore, the procedure needs to be repeated up to five times because the laser affects only the hair that is currently in its growth phase. It’s also worth mentioning that approximately 70% of hair is removed already during the first session. What is the most outstanding about laser hair removal is the fact that it removes hair for good! And this is the factor that convinces me most. Of course, we can undergo the procedure at a beautician’s where we have to pay separately for every body part we want to have freed from hair. Home laser hair removal devices have less power but, still, we can get rid of body hair if we devote enough time to the procedure. I guess, soon I’ll get this device.
