Skin covered with spider veins. How to take care of couperose-prone skin?

Hi Girls!

Raise your hand those of you, who have to struggle with dilated capillaries just like me!

As it turns out, many people must live with spider veins. They are likely to appear on the skin if your blood vessels are weaker. I have quite a few tiny red veins visible all over my body. Unfortunately, I had to learn to live with them, because without a laser therapy, you cannot remove them. We can only learn how to prevent the capillaries from breaking and act prophylactically.

Couperose skin – what does it mean?

Until recently, I had no idea that I had a couperose complexion. It’s the type of skin where the blood vessels have a problem with proper constringing. The result of this are ruddy cheeks, often red face and constantly dilated capillaries, i.e. spiders, which I have mentioned above. These red threads visible under the skin can really spoil the image and are difficult to hide even under makeup.

Why do I have broken capillaries?

I have the impression that all these problems started to pile up over time, although I just could not notice them before. That would be right because couperose skin appears most often in the thirties when collagen production decreases and microcirculation worsens. The situation is also aggravated by estrogens, our female hormones that relax the blood vessels. And, as women usually have thinner skin, all of the dilated capillaries are primarily our affliction.

I know … it’s unfair that couperose skin very rarely occurs in men.

How to get rid of dilated capillaries?

Theoretically, there’s nothing we could do because that’s how we were designed by nature. Practically, there are several methods that could help in such a situation. Unfortunately, you’re not able to get rid of them in the comfort of your own home (but there is a way to remove them with a laser therapy). What you can do at home is to prevent their formation and expansion. If we strengthen the blood vessels, we will reduce the risk of the emergence of more spider veins. It will also prevent the skin from becoming red.

Okay, it’s time we get to the details. I will describe my ways of reducing dilated blood vessels and I will discuss step by step how to care for the skin with broken capillaries.

Couperose skin care – cosmetics

Before I proceed to the most important rules, I would like to remind you how important is the selection of the right cosmetics. Especially when we have a couperose complexion – I know something about it. If our skin reacts with redness and burning to most cosmetics, then natural products may be a good solution. Hypoallergenic and minimalistic formulas are something that my capillary skin loves, so I think you can test them yourself.

Before the first use of a new cosmetic, I recommend running an allergic test, i.e. use a little bit on an invisible piece of skin and observe for a minimum of 24 hours. This way you will be able to see whether or not it causes irritation or redness. Only after such a test, you can apply the cosmetic onto the whole face. For me, such a practice has often prevented irritation of the entire face and subsequent breakage of blood vessels, because the seemingly natural and safe product has proved to be sensitizing.

Now, I will tell you what to do when choosing cosmetics for couperose skin.

  • Use cosmetics intended for couperose or sensitive skin.
  • Replace the mechanical scrub into an enzymatic peel.
  • Choose products with an additional UV filter and protect your skin from the sun.
  • Reach for a serum with vitamin C or ginkgo extract.
  • Get a concealer with a green pigment that will mask the redness.

What to avoid? Above all, cosmetics with ingredients that stimulate blood circulation in the skin, e.g. chili, witch hazel extract, caffeine, camphor, cinnamon, menthol or ginger.

Couperose skin care – mistakes you should not make ever again

Taught by experience, I can warn you now against bad practices in daily care, which can deepen the problem of broken capillaries. Properly composed cosmetics are not enough to strengthen the blood vessels. Hmm … they are enough, but these positive effects can be quickly overshadowed by mistakes that we commit unknowingly.

Things that couperose skin does not like:

  • mechanical peels,
  • washing in hot water,
  • rough sponges and face brushes,
  • rubbing with a towel,
  • stretching the skin, for example during makeup removal,
  • facial yoga (muscle exercises),
  • microdermabrasion, mesotherapy,
  • sunbathing and sun exposure without an SPF filter.
