Home hand treatments. My tried-and-tested masks and oils

You keep asking me, how to make your hands look beautiful. I reply that you have to condition them appropriately. However, to shed more light on this ‘conditioning issue’, I decided to devote an entire entry to hand care. I’m going to discuss various methods of bringing beauty back to your hand skin. Enjoy reading!

If we want to take care for our hands in a way that doesn’t require considerable financial outlays, I can recommend taking advantage of homemade hand masks. From my own experience I can say that, fairly frequently, such treatments are more effective than some professional products and procedures carried out in beauty parlours. Home treatments own their effectiveness to their naturalness and the fact that we can alter them to match our skin needs. Moreover, home hand treatments can be carried out using easy-accessible food products. Therefore, such procedures are cheaper, safer, more effective and easy to perform – I find this solution profitable.

What do home hand treatments give us?

  • Reinforce this naturally thin protective skin layer of fats that our skin features.
  • Moisturise hands, or to be more precise they prevent water loss.
  • Nourish, smooth and strengthen hand skin.
  • Prevent hand skin from chapping and dry skin patches.
  • Deliver relief to chapped hands by protecting them.

Point 1 – Hand Scrub

Our hands lose moisture very fast due to being in frequent contact with detergents, for example. Because who needs rubber gloves to do the washing up, right? As a consequence, we wash away the protective layer and then we expose our hands to the adverse action of wind and cold. As a result, our hands become dry and rough, their old smoothness can’t be restored even by the best hand creams applied regularly. Therefore, before you proceed with any hand regenerating treatment, I suggest you applying scrubs. What for? This cosmetic will remove dead epidermis cells.

Which hand scrub is the best? Of course the one made of natural substances. In most cases I mix 2 spoons of fine coarse sugar with a tablespoon of olive oil. You can also use finely grinded raspberry seeds and argan oil. An extra moisturisation is provided by adding natural honey whereas a dash of lemon juice is going to highlight skin. The most important rule says: hand scrub should be as non-invasive as possible, hence, the exfoliating particles should be of the tiniest size you can find.

How often should we apply hand scrub? Not more frequently than twice a week because skin needs to be given time to regenerate after this exfoliation process. If you reapply such a product too often, this can lead to irritations and disturbance of protective lipid layer of hand skin.

Point 2 – Hand Skin Treatments

Properly exfoliated hand epidermis equals open door for all the nourishing and moisturising substances to act. In other words, they can reach the deepest skin layers. Therefore, all hand treatments should be carried out after removing dead epidermis cells. And this is worth bearing in mind!

Herbs for Hands – Pot Marigold and Linseed

Hand herbal bath is a way to regenerate and protect epidermis. Especially beneficial is pot marigold infusion – 4 spoons of flowers have to be covered with boiling water, infused and cooled down. Keep our hands drowned in this pot marigold infusion for 10 minutes so as to let all essential carotenoids and vitamin C penetrate through the skin, and then dry the hands. Also, you can make a good use of flaxseed which is known for accelerating wound healing processes as it softens skin. Linseed bath has to be carried out in the same way as pot marigold bath. These are two methods that I often reach for.

Oils for Hands – Olive Hand Mask

Another suggestion from me is a hand oil mask made of olive oil and egg’s yolk. Three spoons of warm oil (not boiling so as to avoid scalds) have to me mixed with one egg’s yolk. This pulp has to be applied to hands, then wrapped with food foil and a towel. Ok, this isn’t the most convenient form of spending your free time, I agree with you on that, but try to endure with your wrapped hands for 20 minutes so as to help all fatty acids, zinc, vitamin A and E supply your hand skin with nourishment, moisturisation and regeneration.

Paraffin Compress for Hands

In my opinion, we are afraid of this substance completely gratuitously because paraffin softens epidermis, smooths and stores moisture inside the skin. How to apply paraffin to hands? I do this by melting a small piece of paraffin bought in a drugstore (I recommend doing a water bath for that) and then, I put my hands into the liquid when the paraffin cools down and becomes slightly dense. I secure this wax gloves with foil and a towel. After 15 minutes I crack the gloves and wipe the hands. I understand that you might find this treatment slightly bizarre but believe me, it’s super effective.

Potato Dressing for Hands

Home treatments for hands are characterised by the fact that they can be carried out just by using the easy-accessible products, such as potato. But what is so beneficial in potatoes that might improve state of our hands? First and foremost, these vegetables contain protein, starch, vitamin C and enzymes. Just mash 2 boiled potatoes, mix with one egg’s yolk and 3 spoons of warm milk. If you let this kind of potato dressing sit for 15 minutes on your hands, you will gain more nourished, smoothed and highlighted skin.

Give a go to my ways of restoring good health to your hands and tell me if they served you right!
